Recount text


Recount is a type of genre with the following features:
a. Social Function
Recount tells what happened. The purpose of the factual recount is to document a series of events and evaluate their significance in some way. The purpose of the literary or story recount is to tell a sequence of events so that it entertains. Anderson and Anderson (2003:48) explain that the purpose of a recount text is to give the audience a description of what occurred and when it occurred. A recount text has expressions of attitude and feeling, usually made by the narrator about the events.
b. Generic (schematic) Structure.
This includes:
(i) An orientation (first paragraph) providing information about setting, introduces participants (who, what, where, and when,);
(ii) A series of paragraphs that retell the events in the order in which they happened;
(iii) Personal comments and/or evaluative remarks, which are interspersed throughout the record of events (not always necessary), (Anderson and Anderson, 2003: 50)
c. Grammatical Features of a Recount
They cover the following things:
(i) Proper nouns and pronouns to identify people, animals, or things involved;
(ii) Descriptive words to give details about who, what, when, where, and how;
(iii) The use of Past Tense to retell past events;
(iv) Words that show the order of the events ( for example, first, next, then); (Anderson and Anderson, 2002: 24)
